Novel fiber design for broadband long period gratings

We report a novel fiber design for obtaining long period gratings (LPGs) having a broad transmission spectrum. These gratings are based on guided to guided mode coupling in a staircase profile fiber. Numerical simulations predict 20 dB bandwidths as high as 100 nm and an estimated insertion loss of less than 1 dB. Such broadband LPGs are expected to find applications in many all fiber components.

Polarization-dependent loss and birefringence in long-period fiber gratings.

Widely used descriptions and relationships for birefringence and polarization-dependent loss (PDL), developed primarily for ultraviolet-induced long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) written in optical fiber, can be invalid for other types of LPFG. The understanding of PDL is expanded to include LPFGs with birefringence in the core only, in the cladding only, and in both the core and the cladding. ...

Reconstruction of long-period fiber gratings from their core-to-core transmission function.

In order to reconstruct the structure of a long-period grating, both the complex core-to-core transmission function and the complex core-to-cladding transmission function should be known. However, in practice, only the core-to-core transmission function of the grating can be measured. We demonstrate theoretically the reconstruction of long-period gratings from only the core-to-core transmission...

Analysis of optical response of long period fiber gratings to nm-thick thin-film coating.

We theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the resonant wavelength of long period fiber gratings (LPG) could be shifted in a large magnitude by coating only nm-thick thin-film whose refractive index is higher than that of the glass cladding. The resonant wavelength shift results from either the variation of the thickness of the film and/or the variation of the refractive index of the...
